A heatwave is defined as “an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year, which may be accompanied by high humidity”.
As the summers are getting hotter clearly that expectation will move. A heatwave will not be above a fixed temperature, e.g. 24 degrees, but the following year will be so much higher, as the expected heat for any given time of year will increase as the temperature rises.
No thought is given to the microwaving of the planet as more satellite TV channels are demanded, 5G phones are in high demand also, and that will only rise too – like the heat.
The major change since the beginning of World War 2 in 1939, has been the increased radiation in the form of Radio (less destructive), Television, Radar, and, of course, the boom in Mobile Phones. Yet ‘market forces’ will not allow the limitation of these items since there is so much money involved in their sales, both active – new phones arrive every year – and passive, the extension of channels. We cannot imagine individuals giving up their mobile computer devices, nor the military sacrificing the advantage that radio activity provides. Both in terms of identifying invading aircraft, as well as controlling the increasing use of drones.
At the same time the uncontrolled rise in climate change, or global warming, has become marked. The forests are burning, or being cut down to provide for luxury accommodation and trinkets for the nouveau riche in China and elsewhere. Yet trees are one possible major solution to the global crisis since they lift tonnes of water into the air – thereby cooling the air, as well as providing rainfall on hot soil.
We have no mechanism for the supervision of commercial enterprise. The only value is ‘market value’, no thought given to damage to life on the planet. The seas are sucked dry of life, and yet fish are advertised as a source of omega 3 oils, as if immature fish will continue to breed as the former adults have done. They are losing their breeding grounds, as well as their tutors, in the form of mature fish.
A global policing of the use of finite resources – fish, birds, trees, butterflies – is required urgently.
